Sacheen Lake - “Lake of the Fallen Tree”, as loosely translated from the Salish Indians who first settled the lake. The raw and uninterrupted beauty of this peaceful lake inspires, especially the beauty of its context - the fallen tree. This house was meant to be a gesture to the fallen tree - less about the lake and encroaching the lake front, and more about receding into the forest to root amongst the trees.
While taking full advantage of the lake views, the house tucks back into nature and gains the feeling of a forest cabin. The mechanized perforated metal panel system allows for cover from the falling debris and swaying motion of the ever changing coniferous forest. The ability to operate the mechanized flaps allows for an amazing experience among the trees with carefully considered skylights, windows, and program arrangement. The industrial materiality is contrasted inside by soft and warm woods from the surrounding flora, while the metal mesh creates a transition from solid concrete to the porosity of the forest.
